Next Steps Should Mean Evidence, Not Momentum
CFAA argues that a next-steps agenda should not become a shortcut around the evidence Alberta needs for adult autonomy.
A review is not a rubber stamp
the Economic Future committee page says Bill 208 was referred to the committee on April 20, 2026, and written submissions closed August 17. A next-steps discussion should turn those submissions into public reasoning, not simply move the file along.
Autonomy requires reasons
Premier Smith previously argued that restrictions can push nicotine purchasing into harder-to-monitor channels, according to CHAT News Today. That principle should apply inside Alberta too: when government restricts access, it should publish the enforcement reason and the expected consumer response.
What CFAA is watching
- Whether adult testimony is summarized fairly.
- Whether illicit and online channels are separated from legal retail.
- Whether Alberta adds review triggers before implementation.
